As we continue to pursue a healthy and sustainable long-term recovery together, we are honored to have the opportunity to share emerging resources with you. This is our fourth message focusing on bringing you recovery updates and tools in the aftermath of the 2025 LA fires. You can access the previous newsletters in the message below.

On Thursday, June 12, The California Housing Finance Agency launched the CalAssist Mortgage Fund. This fund will provide 3 months of mortgage payments for qualifying households. To apply, please see the details in the below message.

Additionally, because there may be a large gap between what insurance will pay and the real cost of recovery and unmet need, we are providing a link below to a document that outlines organizations and programs that provide some resources to help address the gap between insurance benefits and recovery.

Many organizations continue to strive to support our community’s recovery by providing access to ongoing resources and opportunities. As we receive updates, we will continue to share them with you and we hope that you will find them helpful.

CalAssist Mortgage Fund

Help for Disaster Survivors

Eligible homeowners can receive 3 months of mortgage payments, up to $20,000.
Grants do not have to be repaid.
Applying to the program is free.
Approved grants will be sent directly the mortgage servicer.
Funds will be awarded for as long as they are available.
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted.

Eligibility Overview

Applicant’s primary residence was destroyed or left uninhabitable due to a qualified disaster from 01/01/2023 through 01/08/2025.
Applicant meets program income limits.
Applicant has a mortgage or reverse mortgage.
Applicant owns a single-family home, condo or permanently affixed manufactured home (may include up to 4 units).

Get Prepared to Apply

Beginning June 12, homeowners can access the online application and program information at CalAssistMortgageFund.org.

Applicant Support

For in-depth, one-on-one assistance with preparing and completing your application, homeowners can call 1-800-501-0019 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additionally, your can access free support and services from HUD-certified housing counseling agencies.

2025 Los Angeles Fires Financial Resources Guide

While pursuing long-term recovery following a disaster, navigating the financial implications around mortgage payments/obligations and insurance benefits can be incredibly challenging and raise many questions. The below linked organizations and programs provide some resources to help address the gap between insurance benefits and recovery - providing guidance on how to work with insurance and mortgage providers following disaster impact to your home.

Pepperdine Disaster Relief Clinic

The Pepperdine Caruso School of Law (CSOL) has created the Disaster Relief Clinic to assist victims of the recent Palisades and Eaton Fires. This service offers pro bono services to individuals for any fire-related assistance needed. The clinic is staffed by students supervised by lawyers licensed in California as well as volunteer attorneys and in-house staff attorneys.

Assistance can be provided for FEMA applications and appeals, insurance questions and disputes and matters involving landlord / tenant issues. Other assistance can be provided as needed or referred to other pro bono lawyers or relief agencies who may be able to provide assistance.
